The ability to use English fluently has become one of the indispensable tools that can keep us in pace with the development of the contemporary society.

 

An English-speaking environment and courses taught in English are essential for learning English. As the third largest English-speaking country in the world, the Philippines have become one of the ideal countries for studying English abroad. By comparing the strengths, facilities, and reviews of various English academies, I eventually chose Monol International English School in Baguio.

Monol’s curriculum is very comprehensive. The ESL courses offered covers listening, speaking, reading, writing, and business English. Also, there are IELTS courses suitable for those learners who want to immigrate. I have been working for a long time and wanting to improve my speaking skills. I believe that Intensive Speaking ESL (IS ESL) can satisfy this need. Before entering any course, each student takes a graded test. My test result is Intermediate Level 1.

If you choose IS ESL as your course, then you will have 5 hours of one-on-one classes a day. It is mainly divided into three major levels: beginning, middle, and high. Each major level is divided into two sub-levels: 1 and 2. There are 6 levels in total. You can also have other optional classes in the morning and evening. Now, let me introduce the classes of the course.

8:00 to 10:00 (English Communication Development class)

Each lesson has a wide range of topics like work, culture, entertainment, travel, technology and so on. We are given a set of pictures based on the topic, which we need to describe and discuss in English. Follow-up questions will be asked along the way. The teacher corrects our grammar and expressions as a way of improving our sentence organization skills. Then, a 15-minute Listening training comes next, in which we need to fill in the blanks with the words we hear and explain them. In the final part, we’re given 10 questions to discuss. In that two-hour course, which is approximately 30 minutes, are for listening and grammar training. The remaining one and a half hours are spent to have conversations with teachers. It is a good opportunity to practice spoken English.

After the class, we can have an hour of break. We can review what we have learned or preview the next class during that period.

11:00 to 12:00 (Picture Description class)

Our tasks go the same with the class above, although this is more of describing the pictures shown to us. We also have moments of Listening training and discussion with the teacher.

14:00 to 15:00 (Perspective class)

Here, we get a relatively long article. Its content is also relatively difficult. We read the article and the teacher corrects our pronunciation. We explain the article afterward to test if we really understand its content. Then, we answer the 10 questions given in the discussion text.

15:00 and ending in 16:00 (Developing Basic Comprehension class)

It starts with a five-question discussion dialogue about a subject, wherein we need to express our opinions and ideas. It is followed by Listening training, in which we should write the general idea of the article we heard. The teacher will correct the inadequacies of our writing composition and will discuss the 10 questions given in the discussion of the text. 80% of the 5-hour course focuses on speaking. Through the continuous correction of the English expression, we can quickly improve our communication ability in the process. It also improves our listening skills.
